Jugulotympanic and carotid body tumours are the two most frequent, followed by vagal or aortic lesions.
Jugolotympanic paraganglioma can be quite small and located on the promontory of the middle ear or it can be larger, filling the cavity of the middle ear and protruding through the tympanic membrane. More than one third of jugulotympanic paragangliomas present as a bluish mass behind the tympanic membrane or as a polyp in the external ear canal and a casual biopsy can lead to troublesome bleeding.
