An invasive papillary carcinoma is an invasive adenocarcinoma which has a predominantly papillary morphology (> 90%) in the invasive component. Invasive non-papillary carcinoma associated with encapsulated papillary carcinoma and solid papillary carcinoma should not be classified as invasive papillary carcinoma, but categorized according to the individual invasive component. As a consequence, true invasive papillary carcinomas are rare. Papillary metastases from other primary sites should therefore be considered in the differential diagnosis.
