. Myelodysplastic syndromes are classified based on cytogenetics, and the type of therapy leading to the condition. Most cases of MDS are clonal disorders of haematopoietic stem cells, with some evidence of maturation. Risk of leukemia is high, and resembles Acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) with myelodysplasia-related changes.
