Gemistocytic astrocytoma is a variant of diffuse astrocytoma WHO grade II , characterised by the presence of a conspicuous though variable fraction of gemistocytic neoplastic astrocytes. Gemistocytes should amount to more than approximately 20% of all tumour cells. The occasional occurrence of gemistocytes in a diffuse astrocytoma does not justify the diagnosis of gemistocytic astrocytoma 1
